Up the Glenn

Web design in Eagle River

Eagle River businesses have a specific local search problem that nobody in Anchorage has, and most of them have never had it explained. Your mailing address and the thing your customers type into Google are not the same word.

The day to day work on these builds happens up the Glenn, in Eagle River.

Your address says Anchorage. Your customers say Eagle River.

Eagle River is part of the Municipality of Anchorage. It was annexed in 1975 when the City of Anchorage and the Greater Anchorage Area Borough unified, and administratively it has been Anchorage ever since (source).

Nobody who lives here talks that way. They say Eagle River. They search "plumber eagle river," not "plumber anchorage," and if your website and your Google Business Profile only ever say Anchorage, you are optimized for a word your own neighbors do not use. That is the gap, and it is the single most useful thing to fix on an Eagle River business's site.

The fix is not complicated. Name the place on the page, set the Business Profile service area to cover Eagle River and Chugiak explicitly, and stop letting the mailing address do all the talking. It takes an afternoon and it is worth more than a redesign.

A smaller market that behaves differently

This is a commuter town. A lot of people here work in Anchorage or at JBER and are only home in the evenings, which changes when they search and how fast they expect an answer. A form that gets replied to the next business day loses to the competitor whose site let them book at 9pm.

It also means word of mouth is unusually strong. Eagle River is small enough that people ask the neighborhood before they ask Google, so a lot of your traffic will be somebody checking whether the business they were told about looks legitimate. That visit is a credibility test, not a discovery. The site has about four seconds to pass it.

Compete for the phrase, not the city

Because Eagle River sits inside the Municipality, you get an unusual advantage: you can reasonably target both. Show up for "eagle river" searches, where the competition is thin, and still be eligible for Anchorage searches, where it is not.

Most local businesses do neither well. They put "Anchorage, AK" in the footer and stop. Doing the Eagle River half properly is close to free and it is the half almost nobody has done.

Common questions

Eagle River, answered

Should my Google Business Profile say Anchorage or Eagle River?

Your address is what it is, and it should be accurate. The lever is the service area: set it to explicitly include Eagle River and Chugiak, and make sure the website says Eagle River in the places customers read. The address field and the service area do different jobs.

Is there enough search volume in Eagle River to bother?

Less than Anchorage, and far less competition, so it is often the better trade. Ranking first for a term thirty people search beats ranking twelfth for one that three hundred search. We would rather you own the small term and pick up Anchorage traffic as a bonus.

Are you actually in Eagle River?

The work gets done up here. The registered office and mailing address is in Anchorage at 1101 Gambell St, and we keep that single address consistent everywhere on purpose, because businesses listing two addresses confuse their own Business Profile.

Do you cover Chugiak and Peters Creek?

Yes, and they are worth naming separately on your site for the same reason Eagle River is. People search the name of the place they live in, not the name of the municipality that administers it.

What does a site cost up here?

The same as anywhere else we work. Builds start at $1,500 and most small businesses land between $3,997 and $9,997. There is no Anchorage premium and no Valley discount.
